A portrait of a human being, painted, drawn or sculpted by another human being's hand, must be one of the most poignant records of our existence on this planet. The reasons why people commission portraits are innumerable but the primary motive is the need to connect emotionally with a representation, an image, of someone special.
The methods and styles employed in the creation of a portrait vary considerably from artist to artist. My method is to ideally meet the subject, converse with them and take photographs. From there I work with that pose, that expression which seems to convey most closely the person I met, be the aspect natural, dramatic, wild, serious, humorous or sad. I let the character of the person being painted suggest the mood of the painting. |
